it is old school, union busting technique, pure and simple. and in michigan and ohio, we know a lot about union busting. as the daughter of auto workers, i know the history of the hired goons who bludgeoned auto workers back in the 1930's at river rouge, as workers began to stand up for their human rights as they labored in the dungeons of the automotive production facilities at the time. i actually would like to challenge the governor of michigan to come with me and let's work on the line. a month in one of those motion rerepresentive jobs that make and characterize modern automotive production. they are not easy jobs. i'd like him to install the windows on the right side of a vehicle as it moves down the line over and over and over and over and over and over again. let's see how much fun he'll have. a year ago we in ohio witnessed a similar effort to eliminate unions in ohio, right-wing legislators moved through legislation that would have ended collective bargaining as we know it in ohio for public sector workers. we are talking about firem

and i was just so happy to be at that wedding and to see that union, that marriage. and i was very pleased to see the happiness and the love that was there at that time. my only regret is that his mother wasn't there to see it as well. because she would have been so proud. one thing you'll never say about barney frank or john olver, i don't think there was ever a tv ad, an attack ad that had one of those weather vein issues, you know, where you change a position on this and you change your position on something else, on an important issue. they were both resolute. and hit opportunity to serve with john -- and i had the opportunity to serve with john briefly in the senate in massachusettsment and interestingly enough, when he was chairman of taxation in the senate, i was his successor as chairman of taxation in the massachusetts senate. and when i had that position i started going through the reports and the research documents and i knew that they just weren't done by researchers . that they had his thumbprints and his intellectual abilities all over them. i must tell

it's not a political idea to give people the freedom not to join a union, it's an american idea and it's an idea that works. we can look around the country today and again, we make these things political and give them labels that are good or bad, depending on, i guess, which party you're in. but we know a number of states have been real innovative and creative with what they're doing in education. we see what they've done in florida to create more choices. in louisiana particularly. forced by hurricane katrina to start a new system, in effect, and they see that more choices and students for parents to choose are helping low-income at-risk kids, minority kids. we can see it working. and it's not political. it's an american idea to give parents more choices to put their children in an environment that they can succeed. it's an idea that works. we can look around the country at states that try to create a more business-friendly environment, not because they're for businesses or for any political reason or they're for special interests, but they know the only way to get jobs and prosperity a
